Flowing Tai Chi: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Nature

Chih-Kai, Kang & Chun-Ping, Li's Award-Winning Design Balances Functionality and Sustainability

Flowing Tai Chi, an innovative sales center design by Chih-Kai, Kang & Chun-Ping, Li, embodies the harmonious relationship between architecture and nature. Inspired by the principles of Yin and Yang, this design represents a unique blend of form, function, and environmental sustainability.

The design draws its inspiration from the concept of Yin and Yang, two opposing yet harmonious elements. This principle is reflected in the building's form and materials, symbolizing the balance between architectural design and environmental protection. While these aspects may seem contradictory, finding a harmonious way to integrate them results in a sustainable and balanced symbiosis.

Flowing Tai Chi is not just a sales center for a large community construction plan, but a multi-functional space that serves various purposes. Apart from fulfilling its commercial role, the design also provides a versatile area for cultural events and exhibitions, thus adding significant value to the project. The design's unique properties lie in its diverse functionality and commitment to green architecture.

The realization of this design involves a careful selection of materials and architectural techniques. The main areas, including the multimedia projection room and exhibition area, are designed without windows to minimize air conditioning energy consumption. The reception and negotiation space, on the other hand, utilizes a frame structure combined with energy-saving glass, creating a column-free, light-filled space.

The design also incorporates an innovative rainwater management system. The system directs rainwater through a unique slope and catchment design into the local drains and sewers, reducing surface runoff and contributing to flood control. This feature further underscores the project's commitment to sustainability.

The design's concept is rooted in the Chinese thought of Laozi's "Tai Chi" and the "Yin and Yang" principle. The building's form resembles the fluid movements of Tai Chi, symbolizing a harmonious coexistence with the ecological environment. This design won the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2016, a testament to its outstanding creativity and wisdom in advancing art, science, design, and technology.
